Virtual reality (VR) is more than just a buzzword. It is a portal to immersive experiences that are changing the way we engage with technology and with one another. VR is a 3D scene or image that is so realistic that your mind acknowledges that you are in a simulated environment. It is altering areas such as healthcare, education, and real estate, among others, and is not confined to gaming and entertainment.

Virtual reality classifications: VR experiences are classified into three types:
Cinematic VR is similar to watching a movie in a 360-degree setting. It is passive, with no interaction other than glancing about the area.
Interactive VR: Going beyond cinematography, interactive VR allows you to walk around and engage with your surroundings. It includes alternatives like a choose-your-own-adventure plot and simple interactivity like fairground rides.
Immersive VR is the most sophisticated kind of virtual reality, allowing full movement and interaction within a virtual environment. It is the most costly to build, yet it provides the most engaging experience.

Equipment and accessibility: Previously, VR required high-end computer systems and costly headsets. VR is now more accessible thanks to standalone devices such as the Oculus Go and Oculus Quest.

Applications and development: VR applications range from real estate tours to medical teaching. Different development tools are employed depending on the type of VR. Cinematic VR may employ traditional cinematic methods, whereas immersive VR necessitates the use of game engines such as Unity or Unreal.

Beyond VR – XR: This discipline also covers Mixed Reality (MR) and Augmented Reality (AR), which are referred to collectively as XR. MRI adds virtual features to a real-world environment, whereas AR overlays computer graphics on top of a view of the actual world.
